Hot Tubs and Swim Spas are increasingly popular, they are much more affordable than a small but ever so lovely swimming pool and while the hot tub is for relaxation and a gentle bubble, a good swim spa enables you to properly swim for as long and as gently or as fast as you wish.
The biggest issue with hot tubs and swim spas is they are not that lovely to look at, to avoid the sight of a big mass of an object just sitting there, you really work hard on how they integrate with the garden, that’s where Dewlands Garden Design comes in. I like to ensure there is privacy for hot tub users, but with a view out into the garden. A gazebo in which the hot tub sits works well to provide shelter, shade and screening. Sinking the hot tub or swim spa into the ground works well too, especially if you sit it 400-500mm out of the ground the edge then becomes a perfect sitting height making it easy to sit and swing legs in and out.
They are much simpler than pools to install, but there are still a number of considerations. Providing an adequate power supply, sitting it on an adequate base, if it is to be sunk into the ground how to drain away water from the bottom of the pit how the walls will be retained and bridged for maintenance access. Then beyond the specifics of the tub, the design of surrounding patio or deck, gazebo, pool side bar, garden, potentially lighting and sounds system – and don’t forget access to get the hot tub or swim spa into the garden in the first place. As a creative garden designer with a technical background I’m well used to handling such details and ensure that everything is carefully thought through for the team to then be able to create that perfect wallowing experience.
In reality there are lots of sunny days in the UK, and with regular summer heatwaves it can feel like the mediterranean, especially if you are sheltered from any breeze. My clients enjoy using their swim spas and hot tubs all year round, certainly from early spring into late Autumn, and if it’s for exercise and you don’t mind getting a bit nippy before and after a dip then year round exercise and pleasure is totally possible – I’ve not used ours in the snow yet but fingers crossed for a white christmas!
