Back garden redesign with outdoor lounge area near Cuckfield

The Brief

For this project, our client required us not only to produce a design but also to manage the tender process for them. They wanted their well screened suburban garden, which was mainly lawn with some mature trees at the boundary, to be redesigned in order to introduce some interest and features to the garden and make this, not just a more usable space, but somewhere it was a pleasure to spend time and garden, or to relax with family and friends. They were also keen for us to include bee friendly plants into their planting design. This garden is almost created so finished pictures will follow shortly!

Construction Plan for back garden used in design and tender process near Cuckfield

Construction plan

Our client selected us to provide experienced professional garden design help in order to get their garden project off to a flying start. They gave us a budget to work to and asked us to manage the tender process for them. In so doing, we provided construction detail and specifications in order to enable reputable contractors to provide a like-for-like quotation. This is vital for a landscaper to interpret the designs correctly and to be able to quote effectively. We then directly handled any queries and summarised the results for the client to make the final decision.

Planting Design for back garden to include bee friendly plants near Cuckfield

Planting design

Our client was eager to include bee and butterfly friendly plants into our planting design but we also had to ensure that the prevailing soil conditions were suitable for these plants having undertaken the survey. The site sits on the Tunbridge Wells sands formation, going from silty mudstones through to sand with sandstone deposits, but looked well drained. The development is relatively new and so it is unlikely that the ground has seen significant cultivation beyond farming activities and will so likely benefit from bringing in well-rotted compost to boost the organic matter of the top soil. The garden is well sheltered by other properties and by the fencing and trees around, although these trees will cast some shade.

Redesigned for leisure

The new design features a terraced area at the back of the house, a reduced lawn area with stepping stone path which leads up to a decked zone with outdoor lounge space. Some new trees provide privacy and a raised bed and new plants add interest and a screen for garden practicalities such as the compost and shed.
