The client was looking for inspiration and ideas, with formal gardens near to the house, that would then gently melt away into the distant countryside. A way to link in their lake in the top left corner of the plan to the house, and interesting places within the garden to enjoy.
I wanted to give the garden a sense of grandeur. A central focus that would draw you out from the house into the garden and then draw you out again into the landscape beyond, with paths radiating to the horizon achieved simply by closely mown grass between swathes of longer more natural grass. The lines reinforced by avenues of trees or vistas cut through the hedge. Close to the house there are terraces and a path that takes you out to a gazebo with views over the lake. Within the garden there is a secret place, to sit on turf benches and warm the toes by a fire pit whilst talking the night away with good friends.
When I survey a property I also measure up the house. Understanding how a garden will work with the house is key, for example seeing how views from the lounge will work with the vistas created outside. The 3D views show the house in relation to the garden and in particular helps the client understand the different levels within the garden, which is not so easy to determine from a 2D plan.
