Poolhouse steps in need of replacement, Brownheath, Buxted

The Brief

The client wanted to replace the pool house steps and restore the pool area paving and lower terrace to their former glory. This is a lovely secluded setting which had gradually become the victim of the elements over time, resulting in rotting steps and cracked and eroded pointing.

Detailed design of steps

As we were to refurbish the pool area, we wanted to ensure that the new pool house steps would both tie in to that area by echoing the use of existing materials such as the sandstone paving and would also last. The bricks blend in beautifully with the decking already surrounding the pool house and we felt that constructing deeper treads than what were there previously, suited the scale of the area better.

Refurbishment of pool area

The sandstone paving and kerb stones around the pool were desperately in need of repointing. As you can see, this work was done on one of the hottest days of the summer right next to the tantalisingly beautiful and, I’m sure, refreshing pool!

New steps to lower terrace

As well as the new steps to the pool house, we built a matching set leading down from the pool area to the lower terrace. This ensures that the look and feel flows between the different areas. This was, in part, achieved through matching the lime mortar throughout the steps and paving.

Lower terrace

The lower terrace was beginning to move and was in need of new and suitable retainment. We demolished the existing sleeper wall, excavated and poured a proper foundation. A new brick wall was constructed, again using lime mortar, and then we spruced up the paving and temporarily finished it so that it was safe to use before the second phase of the work is to be undertaken. We’ll keep you posted…
