The client saw the quality of our work next door and had a very rickety old timber garage that desperately needed replacing. Also they were keen to make the most of an area behind the garage. By terracing the steep slope, they wanted to create an area for a trampoline and table tennis for the children, and an area for the adults to sit to take in the late afternoon sun and enjoy the warmth of a fire long into the evening – an outside lounge or living room. This should also be ideal for entertaining.
The old garage base was pretty big, although needed a lot remedial work, so there was potential for a much bigger garage and workshop. The area behind the garage being very steep was likely to be overlooked by neighbouring properties, so retaining and adding to existing planting would be key to keeping privacy. The sun sets to the front of the property, making the very bottom of the garden between the garage and the house the spot for the last rays of the sun.
The base needed much work, underpinning, repair of brick work, filling in of an old car maintenance pit, then a new reinforced slab needed to be laid. The garage is a traditional weatherboard construction, with a reclaimed plain tile roof. Tiling a roof is a real pleasure and creating this roof is something that will be there for many years to come. Further to that, we relaid the drains, made good the driveway, and of course organised the electrics for power, lighting and security in the garage.
The three terrace levels are well underway here in order to make a previously unusable slope into some practical areas. The cut and fill was achieved by not having to remove any material from site, which is not only cost effective, but environmentally friendly too.
There are three distinct areas for the family to enjoy separately or together, be that bouncing, competing or relaxing! Given a couple of seasons, the planting will establish and provide some extra seclusion. The lowest terrace provides a lovely space for entertaining friends or purely taking some time to enjoy the view and the rest of the garden in the evening sunshine. All that is required is the garden furniture…
